Featured Projects
Many examples of our work can be found within our services page.
Below is a sample of specific projects we’ve managed from concept, to design, to build.
The Farm at Royal Roads University – No-Dig Edible Landscaping & Urban Agriculture
This regenerative foodscape project is especially close to our hearts. As part of her Master’s in Environmental Education & Communication, Solara has led this initiative full-time as the Food Systems Lead. Hatchet & Seed was contracted to help transform the space from conventional lawn to a thriving example of urban agriculture. Our work included:
Converting ½ acre of lawn into a no-dig, organic vegetable garden
Installing a high-efficiency drip irrigation system across the farm
Building a farm wash station with greywater management via rain garden and swale
Designing and planting an Indigenous medicine garden, diverse hedgerow, and seasonal wetland
Supporting a system that now produces over 10,000 lbs of organic, no-till produce annually, all donated to community food security programs
This has been one of our most comprehensive edible landscaping projects, integrating permaculture principles, ecological restoration, and food justice. Solara continues to oversee planting, harvesting, and volunteer coordination.

Victoria Compost Education Centre - Urban Garden Design & Site Relocation
We love working with mission-driven nonprofits like the Compost Education Centre (CEC) in Victoria, BC. When the Capital Regional Housing Corporation (CRHC) needed to move a portion of the CEC’s site to accommodate roadwork, we were hired to lead the landscape redesign and construction. Together with the CEC Site Manager, we:
Dismantled and relocated allotment garden plots, fencing, and compost bins
Transformed a disused sidewalk into productive community garden space, including perennial borders, fruit trees, and cloche structures
Oversaw the felling and on-site milling of a mature eucalyptus tree, repurposing it into benches, mulch pathways, and garden edging
Installed drip irrigation across the new garden beds
Built a custom greenhouse to support educational programming and year-round growing
This project showcases our ability to adapt landscapes for community resilience, sustainability, and food literacy.
Residential Front Yard Foodscape – From Lawn to Edible Landscape
This Victoria BC front yard transformation is a textbook example of what’s possible when ecological design meets creativity. In just a few weeks, we turned a dormant lawn into a lush, multi-functional edible landscape. Features include:
A curved paver pathway and stone seating circle
Four custom raised beds for vegetables and herbs
A blueberry keyhole bed, raspberry patch, and a pollinator-friendly flower border
A rain garden that captures water runoff from hardscape
A Desert King fig, a semi-dwarf apple tree, and perennial herbs for continuous harvest
Designed for beauty, biodiversity, and production, this front yard is a model for urban permaculture and sustainable landscaping.
Orca Gardens Community Garden - Accessible Community Garden Design
When a local park in Victoria, BC was chosen as the site for a new City of Victoria community garden, we were honoured to be selected as the lead designer and contractor. Managed by the Orca Rescue Society, this space was envisioned as an inclusive, accessible, and community-led growing area. Key elements include:
Stacked log raised beds crafted from local materials
Custom galvalume raised beds designed for accessibility
Crushed gravel paths to ensure wheelchair access
A small orchard of dwarf fruit trees and a seasonal herb garden
